Heather Groves is an Australian visual artist who lives and works in Sydney, Australia on Cammeraygal country. Heather’s works generally look at familiar and intimate subjects, she works to show the hidden tension in these, sometimes lighthearted funny and sometimes comedic noir, she uses printmaking and sculptural processes to tell stories and explore concepts.

Heather graduated BVA Honours (sculpture and book-design/graphic investigation) from the Australian National University (ANU) School of Art and Design. She studied woodcut and lithographic printmaking techniques at L’Ecole Nationale Supérieur des Beaux Arts in Paris, France. Heather has worked at the National Gallery of Australia as artist educator, and she recently completed postgraduate studies in French language and translation at the ANU.

“My current studio practice includes drawing, writing, and relief and intaglio printmaking processes. Recently, I’ve been working with aluminium plates and I find it a delicate contrast to woodcut which I’ve been working in for years. The subjects I choose have some inherent qualities that are useful, formal or spatial, these make them good tools for storytelling. I use metaphor to create graphic works about different subjects that I find curious. I seek out the tension in the subjects that I look at - cacti, termite mounds, dandelions etc., humour is a big part of this, I think sideways about a subject and what it can give in terms of alternative points of view.”

Heather has exhibited in Australia, France, the USA, and the UK, and her works can be found in private collections in Australia, Europe, and the USA.
